Editorial Ilustration

This is an editorial style illustration I did. Susan and I have been living with her sister and brother in-law until we move into our new house and they have a 2 year old and a 1 month old. Being around parents produces some pretty funny scenarios. Susan came up with this idea while we were brainstorming and I drew it out and we started laughing. So here is the final product.

I explored some more with line texture and randomizing some color on the mom's face. I used a sponge brush courtesy of the very talented Chris Lee. I'm really enjoying texturizing my cartoony style. I feel its giving my pieces a new richness my previous cartoons have lacked.

And finally, I had a fun time figuring out how to get those lime textures. I took a high res photo of a lime, grayscaled it, messed with the levels, and then set the layer to multiply so that the texture simply layed on top of the color. Over-all, I really enjoyed working on this piece. Learned a lot and feel great about the final product.

Since I've moved out to Atlanta, I'm realizing that I need to broaden my portfolio. I have a bunch of animation stuff, storyboards, and line drawings, but the market out here is more geared towards advertising. So I'm exploring some new style ideas and focusing more on finished illustrations. In this piece, I'm trying to meld my cartoon style with the old Golden books illustration techniques, and add a few things I've learned from my many talented friends like Christopher Lee, Bryan Arnette, and Chris Allison. This is just a piece of the final illustration, much more is still to come.

CHALK DAY!!!!!!!!!!

That's what the kids of George Washington Elementary School here in Burbank screamed when they ran out of their classrooms for recess... A bunch of us artists and volunteers from Nickelodeon went to GWE early yesterday morning and drew cartoons all over the playground. Then, when the kids came out to recess we drew with them, showing them how to draw Bessie, Patrick, Tuff Puppy, Fanboy, Chum Chum, and of course SpongeBob. It was a lot of fun and the kids had a blast. I can't wait to do it again next year!!!!

Seeing your drawings on screen is a trip... Here are some side by side comparisons of what my storyboards looked like next to the finished product... This job is SO AWESOME!!!! I have to give thanks to Eddie Trigueros for the thumbnails of these funny drawings... His quick sketches taught me a lot. Enjoy...

What in Tarnation?!?!?!

There was this awesome dude who came and posed for our costumed life drawing at Nick a few weeks back... He had such an amazingly animated face, I tried pushing his features even further than he was... Then I got tired of all my bad drawings so i drew the successful banker he was robbing...
